Declaring a Major in Statistics

Any student who is sufficiently prepared for one of the majors (BS or BA) is welcome to declare. No application is required. If you would like to declare a Statistics major, you should follow the steps below, expanding each for additional details and resources.

EFFECTIVE DECEMBER 6, 2023: Our minors (Statistics and Data Analytics) currently require an application to declare, and no minor declarations will be processed during advising hours at this time. Details regarding the application are available on the minor application information page.

You are welcome to meet with an advisor to ask questions or review plans at any point in this process.

1. Review the declaration prerequisites of the major that you plan to declare to ensure that you have finished them.
Note: Third- and fourth-year students who have not yet finished the declaration prerequisites should see the Declaration with Intent section below.

The declaration prerequisites are listed on each major page: BA, BS.

A declaration prerequisite is considered finished when you have a grade that is a C- or higher.

Note that the two majors have similar (but not identical) declaration prerequisites. If you are seriously considering the BS but have not yet decided between the majors, we recommend that you use the BS declaration prerequisite list. All of the BS declaration prerequisite courses can be used toward the BA, but not the other direction.

2. Review the major requirements to develop an approximate schedule for finishing the major and build it into your Stellic planner.

The program requirements are listed on each major/minor page: BA, BS. You can also access the program requirements in Stellic by adding the major as a planned program.

Note that the expected frequency of offering each courses is listed for each course on the courses page.

These example plans to complete a major may be useful as you develop your schedule, but many of the courses can be taken in a different order.

4. Before attending advising hours, submit the Declaration of Major or Minor form.

Instructions for logging in and accessing the form can be found on this form's page on the College website. Be sure to select the correct major so that we receive your declaration.

You can expect an email response instructing you to move onto step 5 below within 5 business days during a fall or spring semester, but you do not need to wait to receive this message to move forward and attend advising hours.

Having trouble using the form? Email CollegeForms@virginia.edu with as much information as possible about your specific problem.

5. Attend advising hours to review your plan with the major advisor and ask any questions.

While you're meeting with the major advisor, they will first review your declaration prerequisites and your plan for completing the major in Stellic. They will then process your declaration form (this may occur during or after your meeting).

You are welcome to ask any questions that you may have at any point during the meeting.

7. Watch for the major to be displayed in Stellic and SIS.

Once the Registrar reviews and approves your form, your major will be displayed in Stellic and SIS. Congratulations, you are now a Statistics major!

Note that if you are declaring during enrollment, you will need to remove and re-add any major/minor restricted courses from your shopping cart once the major is displayed in SIS.

Declaration with Intent

Third- and fourth-year students who have not yet finished the major declaration prerequisites, can declare the major with intent (instead of deferring the major). The purpose of declaration with intent is to allow students who are closer to graduation to enroll in upper-level courses before the major/minor hold is lifted. Students who declare the major with intent are considered officially declared by both the College and SIS. Within the department, your progress through the remaining declaration prerequisites will be reviewed each semester. Once all declaration prerequisites are complete, you will be considered fully declared by the Statistics Department.

To be eligible to declare with intent, it must be feasible for you to finish all major requirements by your expected graduation semester. To declare the major with intent, you will follow all of the steps above.

Note that the Statistics Department considers students to be rising third-years after their fourth-semester classes have ended, meaning that second-year students can begin declaring the major with intent during final exams of their fourth semester. In other words, all second-year students are able to declare by the end of their second year: students who have declaration prerequisites remaining after their fourth semester will declare with intent and students who are finishing their final declaration prerequisites in their fourth semester will declare as usual.

Major Deferral

Because of the declaration with intent policy explained in the previous section, the Statistics Department does not accept major deferrals.
