All Prospective or New UVA students

The Statistics Department has faculty who care about the success of their students and are eager to help you gain knowledge and skills that prepare you for whatever comes next in your academic or professional career. We offer two undergraduate degrees; the BA in Applied Statistics and the BS in Statistics. While we know the prospect of picking a major can be difficult, we encourage you to consider Statistics and in particular to think about the totality of the degree program you will complete.

Statistics at UVA features several foundational topics which cover crucial topics like probability, modeling, predicting, reporting, and programming. The department also offers many courses which you may not find at many other undergraduate institutions such as our Sports Statistics series (two courses), Applied Analytics for Business, and simulation-based courses. Additionally, our majors include a Capstone course which provides a clear opportunity to design and focus solely on completing a substantial project from start to finish working closely with a faculty member. As a Statistics major, not only will you complete your degree program with a diploma, you will also have portfolio of the deliverables you have created throughout your career. In addition to having a strong knowledge base, you will be able to show potential employers or graduate schools examples of strong work you have produced.

If you are visiting UVA Grounds and would like to meet with a Statistics Department faculty member, please contact the Director of Undergraduate Programs, Prof. Gretchen Martinet (gaf9f@virginia.edu).

Transfer Students

Transferring to UVA is a great way to earn your degree at UVA, and the Statistics Department gladly welcomes trasfer students interested in our program. We hope that some of the following Q&A can help you prepare for your transfer and point you to the best resources for your next step

HOW DO YOU TRANSFER TO UVA?

You can learn more about becoming a UVA student by visiting the University Admissions pages.

WHAT ARE SOME COURSES THAT ARE COMMONLY TRANSFERRED FROM VIRGINIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES, AND HOW TO DO THEY COUNT TOWARD THE MAJOR?

Please refer to the transfer credit analyzer for a historical reference on how courses from other institutions have transferred to UVA. You'll find that several courses transfer as STAT 1100, STAT 1120, or STAT 2120. Please note that your specific coursework equivalency will be determined at the time that your coursework is officially evaluated by UVA.

WHAT COURSES SHOULD I PRIORITIZE IN MY FIRST SEMESTER AT UVA?

If you have any left, we recommend taking as many declaration prerequisites as possible if you intend to major in Statistics. In some cases this may not be possible, but you should aim to be on track to complete the major by your expected graduation time.

I COMPLETED THE PREREQUISITES; HOW DO I DECLARE A STATISTICS MAJOR?

Please follow these instructions to declare.

I AM A THIRD YEAR TRANSFER AND I AM MISSING SOME PREREQUISITE COURSES; HOW DO I DECLARE A STATISTICS MAJOR?

As we understand that it is unlikely that you have completed all declaration prerequisite courses, you are able to declare with intent in your first semester at UVA. Once you complete the remaining declaration prerequisite courses with a grade of C- or higher, you will be fully declared. To declare with intent, follow the instructions to declare in the previous answer.

I HAVE A QUESTION NOT LISTED, HOW CAN I GET HELP?

Please contact the Director of Undergraduate Programs, Prof. Gretchen Martinet (gaf9f@virginia.edu).
